Contingent Workforce

A contingent workforce is the part of a company's labor force that is non-permanent — temporary workers, contractors, and agency-placed staff engaged as needs arise rather than as permanent employees.

Companies use a contingent workforce to flex capacity up and down with demand, access specialized skills for a project, or cover gaps without expanding permanent headcount. These workers are often payrolled by staffing agencies rather than the client.

Managing a contingent workforce well means tracking who is engaged, at what cost, and under what terms — which is why larger organizations adopt tools like a VMS or an MSP to keep it organized.
