Temp-to-Hire
Temp-to-hire (also called temp-to-perm) starts a worker on a temporary, agency-payrolled assignment with the option to convert them to the employer's permanent payroll after a trial period.
The arrangement gives the employer a working audition — a chance to evaluate skills, reliability, and fit on the job before making a permanent commitment. If it works out, the worker converts to the employer's payroll; if not, the assignment simply ends.
A conversion (or buyout) fee often applies when the worker moves to the employer's payroll, though the amount and terms vary and are sometimes reduced the longer the temporary period runs.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a typical temp-to-hire period?
Trial periods commonly run a few months — often in the range of 3 to 6 months — but the exact length is set by the agreement between the employer and the agency and varies by role.
